Owls open it up by the end

A close game turned into a not-so-close one on Thursday for the Laguna Blanca girls basketball team. The Owls outscored Valley Christian Academy 25-9 in the fourth quarter to claim a 67-48 non-league victory.

Zoe Serbin and Amanda Schulenberg poured in six points each in the final quarter but Laguna Blanca head coach credited the defense with deciding the game. The Owls, who improve to 4-5, allowed the Lions only one field goal in the last eight minutes.

Serbin and Schulenberg were Laguna’s two high scorers with 14 and 18 points, respectively. Serbin added nine rebounds while Schulenberg recorded five steals and four assists.  Two more Owls reached double-figures in scoring as Natalie Nomura recorded 12 points and Megan McAlister 8.  With 13 rebounds, McAlister took home a double-double.

Una Hertzog led the Lions (2-7) with 20 points.

Laguna, which doesn’t start Condor League play until Jan. 15, hosts Bishop Diego on Saturday at 5 p.m.
