Cougars keep Chargers at a distance

Dos Pueblos’ girls basketball team suffered a 59-34 loss to Ventura on Tuesday night, as the Cougars, ranked No. 2 in Div. II-AA, took over sole possession of first place in the Channel League.

“Ventura, you can play a good game and still have a wide margin of defeat,” noted Chargers head coach Maynard Pilapil, who liked what he saw from his team.

Dos Pueblos’ offense nearly doubled its point total from the first meeting with the Cougars, a 54-18 defeat in the league opener for both teams.

The difference was Ventura’s ability to rule the paint. Amy Pupa scored a game-high 20 points and Maddie Fahan poured in 16.

“They owned us on the boards,” Pilapil said, pointing out that the Chargers improved in the ball handling category, coughing up a reasonable 11 turnovers.

Jasmine Mata tallied 14 points for DP while Chiara DiMarco and Kristen Gowdy recorded nine each. Gowdy added seven rebounds.

Ventura ups its record to 20-2 on the season and takes a half-game lead over Buena in league. Dos Pueblos is 1-4 in league and plays Santa Barbara in its next game next Tuesday.
