Royals split to score third-place result

All-Tournament selection Christian Mkpado and the San Marcos boys basketball team wrapped up their appearance at the San Luis Obispo Tournament on Saturday, splitting a pair of games to finish in third place behind two of the top teams in Southern California.

The Royals turned in a 58-41 victory over San Luis Obispo in the morning game before falling to Ocean View, ranked No. 13 in the L.A. Times’ Southland Poll, 62-49.

Thousand Oaks, the No. 14 team in the Times’ poll, won the tournament. The Royals finished third with a record of 2-2, their only losses coming to the two ranked teams.

FastFrameMkpado was named to the all-tournament team for averaging nearly a double-double over four games.

Against the Tigers, Chad Ridenour led the Royals with 15 points and Mkpado posted 12 points, nine rebounds. Josh Guild helped out in the post, collecting 12 points and eight rebounds.

San Marcos head coach Jarrod Bradley was pleased with how his big men limited SLO’s 6-foot-6 Sean Mullen to nine points.

“We’re really solidifying our defense inside and running the court well,” said Bradley.

Ocean View, which MaxPreps has listed as the No. 24 team in the country, proved to be a much more difficult foe, featuring seven players standing over 6-foot-4.

Junior guard Billy Keller led the Seahawks with 14 points and Anthony Brown and Cristian Rivera added 11 each.

The Royals struggled in the first half against Ocean View’s pressure before turning it around in the second half to score 34 of their 49 points.

“To outscore that kind of team in the 3rd and fourth quarters is really good for us,” Bradley acknowledged.

San Marcos (3-2) moves on to next week’s Coast Union Tournament starting on Thursday.
