Royals refuse to be outdone

Still riding the high from winning last weekend’s Coast Union Tournament, San Marcos’ boys basketball team refused to be brought down on Tuesday night.

The Royals needed to rally at Arroyo Grande to keep their win streak alive, grinding out a 63-60 double-overtime triumph over the Eagles.

It’s the six straight win for San Marcos (8-2), which has its home opener on Thursday against Lompoc.

The Royals benefitted from several clutch performances, led by Johnny Manzo.

Manzo collected 8 of his 13 points in the overtime periods, none bigger than a left-handed bank-shot that forced the second overtime. Manzo, who knocked down a big 3-pointer in the first overtime, and Thayer White sealed the game in the second OT by making their free throws when it counted.

JP Dodson led San Marcos in scoring with 14 points while Josh Guild added 12. Christian Mkpado recorded his seventh double-double in 10 games with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

San Marcos needed to erase a seven-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter just to force the first extra period.

“Our fourth quarters have been great on both sides of ball,” Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley said.

Derick Beasley led the Eagles with 17 points.

“They’re a good team, I was impressed,” said Bradley.

Thursday’s game at the Thunderhut is a 7 p.m. tipoff.
