Cardinals pick up rare decision over Flashes

They may have been on a cold and frosty field at Fillmore High School on Tuesday, but the Bishop Diego girls soccer team continued to heat up, picking up a third straight win after an 0-2 start to the season.

The Cardinals beat the Flashes 2-0 — their first win over Fillmore in at least six years, according to coach Brent Gonsalves.

“It’s the first win that I can remember. They usually beat us 5-0 or 6-0,” he said.

Natalie Durtche scored off of a free kick moments before the halftime whistle to put Bishop up 1-0, and the defense held on the rest of the way. Candace Melgoza added an insurance goal on a counter-attack in the 70th minute.

“It was a great defensive game for us,” said Gonsalves.

The Cardinals (2-3) play at Cate on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
