Cardinals finish tourney by dominating Maricopa

Bishop Diego’s pressing defense was too much for Maricopa to handle, and the Cardinals raced to a 66-28 girls basketball victory in their final game at the Valley Christian Academy Tournament in Santa Maria on Wednesday.

“Our press was very effective,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said. “We had a lot of steals and we were able to make our layups after the steals. That helps.”

Janelle Kohler and Amanda Breuer led a balanced Bishop scoring attack with 10 points each. Kohler also grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals jumped all over Maricopa early in the game and rolled to a 46-10 lead by halftime. It was the second straight game they scored 46 points in the first half.

Bishop Diego (9-5) finished 3-1 in the tournament. Courtney Houston was named to the all-tournament team.
