Dos Pueblos had picked up a 40-point win over a team from Melbourne, Australia to open the Oak Park Tournament earlier in the week.
Well, they got a dose of the Aussies’ “A-Team” on Saturday, losing a close one 63-58 in the fourth-place game.
Jay Larinan had 13 points and all-tournament selection Matt McClenathen had 12 with 18 rebounds for the Chargers (5-3). Junior point guard Pablo Sandoval added 10 points.
“This was their other team, and they were much more athletic. They got up and down a lot better and we had to play from behind whole game,” said DP coach Joe Zamora. “I was a good game against a good team.”
On Friday night, the Chargers defeated Oak Park 66-59 behind 30 points and 12 rebounds from McClenathen, whom Zamora said put in a lot of time in the weight room during the offseason and has come back a much better player in all aspects.
Daniel Prichard took seven charges in the tournament, and Sandoval is running the offense with much more confidence than he did as a sophomore, according to Zamora. Larinan has also come alive this week, particularly against Agoura when he scored 29 points with 11 rebounds.
Dos Pueblos has a tough stretch ahead, with games against Righetti, Lakewood and powerhouse Mater Dei.
Also, the Chargers will hold their alumni game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
