Warriors start off with 30-point blowout

Westmont Men’s Basketball opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 94-63 victory over Bethany (Calif.) at the Las Vegas Shootout on Friday afternoon.  Senior forward John Miller made 10 of 11 attempts from the floor to lead the Warriors offensively.

“I thought John Miller had the best game of his Westmont career,” said Westmont head coach John Moore. “He had a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Andrew (Schmalbach) was six of six (from the floor) and had 16 points. He didn’t miss a shot and made five threes.”

The Warriors, who shot 55% from the floor, put the game away early by jumping out to a 22-7 lead.

“By halftime we had a 25 point lead and then extended it to 40 in the second half,” reported Moore. “Danny (Rasp) had a typical silent double-digit games with 15 points and five rebounds.  Evan (Haines) had another nice game with 10 points, all in the first game.”

“I thought that in the first half especially, we did a nice job defensively,” continued the coach. “We held Bethany to 36% from the floor. For the game, we out-rebounded them 48-28.”

The lopsided victory allowed Moore to clear his bench and give everyone an opportunity to play.

Tomorrow, the Warriors will continue play in the Las Vegas Shootout by taking on top-ranked Robert Morris (Ill.). Tip off is scheduled for seven o’clock.
