Warriors season shuts down at Azusa

Westmont women’s soccer saw its season come to an end in the opening round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament on Tuesday. The eighth-seeded Warriors fell to top-seeded and third-ranked Azusa Pacific by a score of 1-0.

“I thought the team played well in the first half; certainly they defended well and they created a little bit going forward,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. “Once we were down a goal it was going to be hard going against a very good team. The fact that we had played five consecutive overtime games meant it was going to be difficulty to fight back once we were down.”

Azusa Pacific’s goal came in the fiftieth minute when Hayley Gustafson redirected a 20-yard pass from Marissa Ranberger into the goal at the near post.

“We had one very good chance in the second half on a corner that got through the box that we got a pretty good look at,” said Wolf, “but contact on-goal wasn’t great.”

The Cougars out shot the Warriors 14-7 but Westmont actually placed more shots on frame, posting a 5-4 shot-on-goal advantage. Roxanne Love had three saves for the Warriors.

“It was a tough draw for us,” said Wolf. “Azusa Pacific is an outstanding team and certainly deserving of their national rating. They were prepared to play us today.”

Westmont was the only conference team to defeat Azusa Pacific this year, winning by a score of 2-1 in double overtime just two weeks ago.

The Warriors conclude the season with an overall record of 6-8-2. Their conference mark was 4-5-1.
