Stanford keeps Gauchos at arms length

LOS ANGELES – Seventh-seeded UCSB fell to No. 2 seed Stanford on Friday morning in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament being played through Sunday at McDonald’s Swim Stadium on the USC campus. The Cardinal used a strong first quarter to propel themselves to an 11-7 victory over the Gauchos.

Santa Barbara Ramada LimitedStanford jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first eight minutes and never looked back. At halftime, the Cardinal had an 8-4 edge, but UCSB was able to shut down its opposition in the third as it tallied one goal to cut the Gaucho deficit to three goals heading into the final quarter.

The Cardinal outscored the Gauchos 3-2 in the final period as they captured the 11-7 victory and advanced to the tournament’s semifinals on Saturday.

Zsombor Vincze, Sean Castillo and Milos Golic each notched a pair of goals for the Gauchos in the loss. Goalkeeper Fraser Bunn had 10 saves.

The Gauchos will play UC Irvine in the second round of the tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m. at McDonald’s Swim Stadium.
