Owls hit the Rio Mesa wall

Laguna Blanca’s girls tennis team met its match on Thursday in Rio Mesa, succumbing to the division’s No. 1 team in the first round of the CIF Div. IV playoffs by a count of 15-3.

The Owls, which defeated Lancaster on Tuesday in a wild-card match for the chance to play the Spartans, got set wins in singles from Liza Fletcher and Arabella Watters. No. 2 doubles Lauren Conk and Julia Grienitz produced the third triumph, all coming in the final round.

Laguna Blanca, in its first year under the guidance of head coach Brian Antecki, closes out its season with a 9-5 record.

“We have a young team. We’re only losing three seniors,” Antecki said, thanking his seniors, Fletcher, Kelsey Chesterfield and Julia Grienitz, for their leadership this season.

Antecki also praised the play of his top doubles team on Thursday, saying Caitlin Connor and Olivia Liebman “did a great job.”
