Mata materializes in Charger season opener

Jasmine Mata breathed life into the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team on Monday night, scoring 18 of her 23 points in the second half to lead the Chargers past visiting Santa Ynez 54-50.

“If it weren’t for her, I don’t know,” said Chargers head coach Maynard Pilapil, whose team played eight sophomores in its season opener.

Jessica Escalante led all scorers in the first half with 11 but couldn’t break into the scoring column during the final two quarters. The point guard finished with four assists and three steals.

Kristen Gowdy tallied seven points and six rebounds, adding a critical 3-pointer in the final quarter to help stave off the Pirates. Sara Sessler scored 5 and Talitha Draper 3.

Santa Ynez’s Haley King recorded 14 points and Annie Fredrickson pitched in nine.

DP hits the road for some early season tournament action on Thursday-Friday-Saturday in Lompoc.
