Kirk guides Vaqueros to 1-1 draw

Stuart Kirk took a cross from Danny Rodriguez with eight minutes to play Tuesday afternoon and scored the game-tying goal to keep No. 19 SBCC in first place in the WSC men’s soccer race. The Vaqueros (8-6-5, 8-1-4) earned a 1-1 tie at second-place Canyons (11-6-2, 8-3-2) to stay two points ahead with one game to play.

“I thought we were the better team,” said coach John Sisterson. “But you have to put away your chances.”

No. 20 Canyons took the lead in the 25th minute but SBCC had several solid scoring chances on a pair of free kicks by Rodriguez and a header by Danny Molineaux.

If the Vaqueros beat Hancock on Friday in a 7 p.m. game at La Playa Stadium, they’ll clinch their second straight WSC title.

“We control our own destiny, that’s the most important thing,” said Sisterson.
