There were some amazing scores put up at par-72 Cypress Ridge Golf Course for the CIF Northern Division Girls Golf Championships on Thursday, including a round of 66 by Westlake’s Danielle Kang.
Dos Pueblos (435) and Santa Barbara High (478) failed to finish in the top-4 to advance out of the 22-team field, but ended their seasons with some strong performances.
Dos Pueblos finished just nine strokes behind fourth-place Royal, led by a round of 80 from senior Nicole Bullemer. Sami Hill, the team’s other senior, fired an 89. Emily Fox shot an 83.
“I don’t think we had a bad day. We were just slightly less-than-average and we needed to be slightly more-than-average to make it,” said DP coach Rob Schiff. “We couldn’t make enough putts and I think that’s what it comes down to at this level.”
The gridlock on the course caused the round to last six hours.
Santa Barbara was led by Kylie Wagner’s 92. She was followed by a 93 from big-hitting freshman Saralisa Ortega and rounds of 95 from Olivia Fanaro and Sarah Kirkwood.
Kirkwood’s round was eight strokes better than last year’s at the event, and the Dons were 12 strokes better as a team. It was the program’s best-ever season, as the team finished with a 15-4 record.
The next task at hand is to try and de-throne the always-powerful Chargers.
“The girls are talking about it, but it’s gonna take a lot of work,” said coach Ryan Throop. “I think the girls really want it, but we’ll see. I’m just really proud of what they did this season.”
Vanesa Villa will continue on for DP in CIF Individual competition next Thursday, and Chargers coach Rob Schiff said that the seniors will be truly missed.
“Nicole has been one of our best players and leaders for four years now,” he said. “And Sami has to be one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached. When she drives the ball it makes a whole different sound. She can crush the ball, and she doesn’t even play golf that regularly.”
