Chargers make it a family affair in blowout

Coach Todd Garrett made an interesting lineup change down the stretch in Thursday night’s CIF second-round girls volleyball match, and it took awhile for the significance of it to click in with the players on the court.

“They didn’t realize it. I hadn’t told anyone and then one of them noticed that they were all sisters,” said Garrett.

That’s right, Dos Pueblos had three sets of sisters on the court at once in the first set as the Chargers win their second-straight match in under an hour, this time a 25-8, 25-4, 25-11 sweep of visiting Rim of the World.

Stanford-bound twins Carly and Sam Wopat were joined by sophomore twins Taylor and Tristan Racich. It was rounded out with Sammie and Nicki Brown.

“It’s actually a very strong lineup,” noted Garrett, whose top-ranked squad will play either Valencia or El Toro in the next round. If it’s Valencia the Chargers will be on the road, but of El Toro prevails the location will be decided via coinflip.

Paige Craine was the lone setter as Dos Pueblos (27-2) ran a 5-1 offense in the match, and she added four aces with three kills while running the offense efficiently, according to Garrett.

The coach also said that reserves Jordan Roberts, Katie Spieler and Gaelen Vasquez did a nice job coming in.

“We have some good depth on this team. We put 12 girls on the court in practice and it’s a battle. It’s always close.,” he said.
