Chargers just shy of major upset

Dos Pueblos came close to upsetting No. 4 Santa Monica on Thursday, coming up just short in a 10-8 decision in the first round of the CIF Division II girls tennis playoffs.

Sophomore Lauren Stratman swept her sets at No. singles and DP’s No. 1 doubles team of juniors Nicole Eskenazi and Kim Preston did the same. Oriane Mattys and Hanna Schmitz paired to capture the other two sets for the Chargers and nearly forced the match to be counted by games but lost their other set in a tiebreaker.

“They did a great job of staying focused on their game and ended the season with some of their strongest play of the year,” said Chargers head coach Suzy Dahl, whose team finished third in the Channel League. “The entire team showed great sportsmanship and support for their teammates. I was proud of how they rose to the occasion of very challenging match.”
