Zuehlsdorf feeds Warriors GSAC win

Jessica Zuehlsdorf recorded two assists to help Westmont women’s soccer post a 4-1 victory over Golden State Athletic Conference foe San Diego Christian on Saturday afternoon in El Cajon. The senior midfielder earned the praise of her coach.

“Jess had a terrific match,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. “She got loose a bunch, wide on the right side, and served some really good crosses in. Two of those got finished but she hit a bunch of other good ones as well.”

Two recipients of Zuehlsdorf’s efforts were Melanie Greene and Aolani Rueff who scored the first two goals of the game in the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth minutes respectively.  Greene’s goal came on a cross from the corner. Less than two minutes later, Rueff headed in another cross.

The Hawks were able to get one goal back in the thirty-fourth minute when Bianca Silva scored after a battle in the box.

But the Warriors would score two more goals in the second half to secure the victory. The first came in the fifty-first minute on an unassisted goal by Jameisha Washington.

“It started off with Shanae (Coker),” reported Wolf. “She got a ball right around the midfield line. Shanae held off the defender and slipped the ball through to JJ. Jameisha had one person to beat, beat her on the dribble and went to goal on a breakaway.”

The final goal was scored by Haley Yurtin in the eighty-sixth minute.

“Haley picked up a loose ball right outside the box,” said Wolf. “She touched it once and smacked it into the top corner. She both hit it well and placed it well.”

For both Yurtin and Greene, the goals were the first of their collegiate career. It was the first goal of the season for Washington and the sixth for Rueff who leads the team in scoring.

“We continued to get some new people on the score sheet,” said Wolf. “That is a positive. We did some pretty good things in the final third of the field again. I feel like we are building on a bit of a foundation now.

“We’ve had a little bit of a rough week after the Cal Baptist game,” continued Wolf. “We were disappointed with some of the things that happened that day. The team got a pretty stern challenge during the week. I thought they responded to that very, very well today and I am proud of how they played.”

Westmont will play two convocations of Eagles next week. On Wednesday, the Warriors will host the Biola Eagles at three o’clock on Westmont’s Lovik Field. Then on Saturday, the Concordia Eagles will fly in for a night game at La Playa Stadium on the Santa Barbara City College campus. Game time on Saturday is scheduled for seven o’clock.
