Ventura can’t hang with Vaquero spikers

Maria Mayer had 11 kills Tuesday night and Kelsey Soos dished out 43 assists, leading the seventh-ranked SBCC women’s volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 sweep at Ventura.

Nicole Bergmann had nine kills and hit .538 while Jenn Waddill contributed nine kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Jessica Tune added eight kills and Antonia Antes had six.

Jake Kelly registered 17 digs for the Vaqueros (14-2, 3-1 WSC North) while Soos had three aces.

“We played really well with great passing by Jake and Case Jenkins,” said coach Ed Gover. “Jessica was under the weather and she played one of her best matches. And I can’t say enough about Kelsey Soos. She’s one of the best setters in the conference.”

SBCC overcame a 12-6 first-set deficit. Waddill and Soos combined for a big block in the second set, as did Mayer and Bergmann.

The Vaqueros will travel to San Luis Obispo on Thursday to take on Cuesta.
