Vaqueros hold it down at Sports Pavilion

Freshman Antonia Antes collected 10 kills Friday night and No. 7 SBCC survived a set point to sweep Hancock 25-10, 27-25, 25-10 in a women’s volleyball match at the Sports Pavilion.

The Vaqueros (13-2, 2-1 WSC North) boosted their home record to 9-0. Hancock fell to 4-8 and 1-3.

Nicole Bergmann and Jessica Tune added nine kills apiece with Bergmann hitting .412 and Tune .333. Setter Kelsey Soos had four of SBCC’s eight aces.

The Vaqueros jumped out to 12-3 leads in the first and third sets. In the middle set, Hancock led most of the way and had set point at 25-24. SBCC rallied to win 27-25 when Jenn Waddill’s spike caromed off a backrow player.

“Hancock upped their level of play,” said coach Ed Gover. “They served well, they hit well and the setter was thinking of better plays. You need to come back and win games like that. It doesn’t matter if you’re up two, up 10 or down five, you still have to get that next point.”

The Vaqueros will hit the road next week for matches at Ventura (Tuesday) and Cuesta (Thursday).
