The Master’s does a better job of playoff positioning

Westmont men’s soccer suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of #14 The Master’s on Wednesday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. As a result of the loss, the Warriors fall to 4-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play and 6-7 overall. The Mustangs, who currently sit atop the GSAC standings, improved to 13-2-1 overall and 8-1 in the GSAC.

Community West BankJacob Marchesani opened the scoring for the Mustangs in the seventh minute of play when he dribbled across the face of the goal from left to right before firing a shot into the net. After seventy-two minute of scoreless soccer, Doug Armstrong passed the ball to Marcelo Silva in front of the goal. Silva’s shot went into the left corner to give The Master’s a 2-0 advantage with just over 11 minutes left in regulation.

Westmont pulled within one on a goal in the eighty-seventh minute by Daniel Guzman. The ball was headed into the net off a free kick from Henry Sarmiento. A minute later, the Warriors had exactly the same scenario, but could not put the ball in the net to even the score.

The Warriors are currently in seventh place in the conference with one game remaining. Westmont has 12 points in the conference standings (three points for a win, one for a tie) and is two points ahead of California Baptist (4-6-4, 3-5-1 GSAC) who was idle today. Westmont trails Fresno Pacific (8-5-1, 4-3-1 GSAC) by one point. The Sunbirds were losing to Fresno Pacific with 30 minutes remaining at the time of this writing.

Westmont will conclude the regular season on the road, playing at Vanguard on Saturday afternoon beginning at five o’clock.
