SBCC’s Jackson puts away last-minute winner

Lee Jackson scored on a rebound with less than a minute to play Tuesday night at La Playa Stadium, lifting SBCC to a dramatic 2-1 men’s soccer victory over No. 22 Moorpark in a first-place showdown.

The Vaqueros (4-5-2) posted their fourth straight win on a rainy night to stay atop the WSC race at 4-0-1. The Raiders fell to 5-4-1 and 3-2.

Ryan McGavigan assisted on the winning goal with a corner kick from the right side. The keeper couldn’t control the ball and Jackson lofted it back over his head.

“To be honest, I’m not sure what happened,” said Jackson, a freshman defender from England. “I just swung my leg and luckily it went in.”

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead on a goal in the seventh minute by Fernando Zandarin. Stuart Kirk took a pass from Diego Duenas and tied it in the 45th minute, just seconds before halftime.

“In conditions like that, it’s not about looking pretty but grinding it out,” said coach John Sisterson. “We told them at half to be ready for rebounds around the goal and get there before the defender.”

SBCC will host Canyons (4-1), which trails the Vaqueros by one point, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
