Platt, Lebow swing a distinguished club

Shane Lebow

Santa Barbara High School’s Shane Lebow and Laguna Blanca’s Niall Platt made Santa Barbara look pretty smart on Wednesday, as both were named HP Scholastic Junior All-American golfers. Only 12 male student-athletes across the nation are awarded the decoration made by the American Junior Golf Association each year.

While the prerequisite to be considered for the distinction is doing well on the course in AJGA events, grade-point average, class rank, SAT/ACT scores, leadership skills, community service and writing ability in the classroom are all taken into account.

For their acheivement, the pair will travel to Florida in November to the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. An awards banquet and a golf tournament on the resort’s Champion and Haig Courses are all part of the package.

Platt had an impressive summer, finishing second at the AJGA Junior Tournament at Wenatchee. The future Notre Dame player shot 2-under par (70-71-73) in the event. He was also the only junior to make the cut in both the SCGA Amateur in July and the California State Fair Amateur in early September.  This past weekend, he won the SCPGA Toyota Tour Cup at Cypress Ridge, shooting 71-73 in extremely windy conditions.

Lebow, who recently found out he’ll be playing at Stanford next year, is now been named an academic All-American two years in a row. The Dons senior tallied three top-10 finishes at AJGA events during a two-month stretch over the summer. In June, he placed 10th at the Rolex Tournament of Champions in Missisippi. In July, Lebow posted his most impressive result at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships held at world-famous Torrey Pines in San Diego, where he was playing against a highly-competetive international field. Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo won the event finishing 3-under par over four rounds. Lebow tied for ninth place. His highest result was an eighth place at the Emerson Junior Golf Classic at the Maderas Golf Club in Poway.
