Gauchos lose twice by score of 10-9

Sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (8-6) suffered a pair of 10-9 losses on Sunday, the final day of the UCI Invitational, to take eighth place at the tournament. The Gauchos fell to No. 8 Long Beach State before dropping the seventh-place game to No. 5 Loyola Marymount in overtime.

During the first game of the day, UCSB jumped out to a 5-4 advantage in the first quarter and then spread its lead to 7-5 by halftime. Long Beach State came out of the break on fire and outscored the Gauchos 3-1 during the third to tie the game at eight apiece heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Carter Taylor scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal with 1:51 to go, pushing the Long Beach advantage to 10-8. Milos Golic scored his fourth goal of the game just 16 seconds later to cut the 49er advantage to 10-9, but Long Beach was able to hold off the Gauchos in the final minute and a half to capture the victory.

Golic scored four goals in the loss and Zsombor Vincze posted a hat trick. In goal, Fraser Bunn notched eight saves.

In the tournament’s seventh-place game, UCSB took on No. 5 Loyola Marymount. The Gauchos jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the first quarter, but the Lions tied things up at six-all by halftime. LMU climbed to an 8-6 lead in the third, but UCSB rallied back in the fourth.

Milos Golic scored with 4:58 left in regulation, tying the game at 8-8 and Kendell Olds put the Gauchos ahead with 3:10 on the clock. LMU got the ball with 13 seconds left and coming out of a timeout, the Lions’ Tibor Forai fired in the game-tying goal with just seven seconds remaining.

Loyola Marymount’s Charlie Horton scored the last of his three goals with seven seconds left in the first overtime period to seal the victory for the LMU.

Golic once again led all players with four goals in the loss and freshman goalkeeper Myles Christian tallied a career-high 15 saves for the Gauchos in just his second start this season.

The Gauchos will be back in action next week when they travel to UC San Diego for a non-conference pairing at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.
