City College stumbles in first-place clash

Ventura took a 1-0 lead in the third minute Tuesday night and went on to beat SBCC 3-0 in a women’s soccer showdown for first place in the WSC North.

Taylor Benton scored the first goal for the 14th-ranked Pirates (10-3, 4-1) at La Playa Stadium. The visitors made it 2-0 in the 69th minute on an own goal by SBCC.

ThreePicklesFreeSodaThe Vaqueros fell to 7-2-5 overall and 2-1-2 in conference. It was just the third home loss in the last three years (18-3-6).

“Ventura is a good team and our backs were against the wall after the third minute,” said coach John Sisterson. “It was difficult for the next 10-15 minutes, then we settled down and came back at them. We were in the game at halftime (trailing 1-0).

“In the second half, I thought we dominated until the second goal went in. That killed us a little bit and our heads went down. Overall, it was a big improvement from Friday (when they tied Cuesta 1-1).”

SBCC opens the second half of conference play on Friday at Hancock.

It looks like SBCC coaches may have lost that one for them!
Why the drastic line up change? Why not keep what was working?
