Chargers able to dismantle Los Al

The Dos Pueblos girls volleyball team survived a major test on Friday night, fighting off a fierce comeback from Los Alamitos, Div. I-AA’s No. 2 team, to win the non-league matchup 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 17-25, 15-9 at Sovine Gym.

The Chargers, ranked No. 1 in Div. I-A, have only one loss this season, a four-set setback to Northern California power Archbishop Mitty in the final of their own tournament.

Carly Wopat recorded a team-high 16 kills and Sam Wopat tallied 12 more. Sammie Brown added nine.

DP took a 2-games-to-none lead but the Griffins weren’t going to lay down so easily.

“They actually picked it up and started firing on all cylinders,” said Chargers assistant Greg Novak. “Their libero was phenomenal, she wouldn’t let anything drop.”

Dos Pueblos regrouped in the fifth game, holding a steady lead throughout on the way to the big win.

DP, 12-1, returns to league play on Tuesday at home against Ventura.
