Carpinteria crumbles against Rangers, 41-20

For the second week in a row, Carpinteria’s Paul “Munchie” Aguilar intercepted the opposing quarterback’s first pass. This time, he took 59 yards for a touchdown against Nordhoff.

But what also happened for the second straight week is that the Warriors couldn’t keep up the momentum after the first quarter, falling to the host Rangers 41-20. Nordhoff scored 28 points in the second quarter and exacted revenge on Carpintera, who defeated the Rangers 18-15 last year to keep them out of the playoffs. Nordhoff has now won seven consecutive games after opening the season with a loss to Pioneer Valley.

Community West Bank“We need to put it togther and play well for an entire game, which we haven’t done yet,” said coach Ben Hallock. “We need to put four of those quarters together.”

The Warriors (0-8) gained 174 yards rushing but just two yards passing. Aguilar, the starting quarterback, was sacked six times in the game.

The Rangers, on the other hand, scored all five of their touchdowns through the air. Quarterback Skyler Logsdon broke the school’s single season record for touchdown passes in the game. He now has 23 on the year.

Hallock said that Robert Thornton — a senior who came back to football this year after having not played since junior high — played a solid game at cornerback, racking up “a bunch” of tackles and also scoring one of Carpinteria’s two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Both scores came at the end of 80-yard drives, withe the first ending on an 11-yard scamper by Aguilar and the second on Thornton’s 9-yard run.

The Warriors missed two field goals and an extra point in the game.

Next week is a huge rivalry matchup against Bishop Diego in the “Little Big Game,” to be played Saturday at La Playa Stadium.
