Vaqs lose lead, settle for 2-2 tie

SBCC built a 2-0 lead on Friday night in the opening round of the Mt. SAC men’s soccer tournament, then settled for a 2-2 tie with Santa Ana in Walnut.

Ryan McGavigan, a freshman forward from England, scored in the 44th minute on an assist from Danny Molineaux. Melvin Yekeh made it 2-0 in the 50th minute by hammering in a corner kick from McGavigan.

“It was a big improvement over last week,” said coach John Sisterson, whose team is 0-1-1. “We competed well against a good team.”

Sisterson said the Vaqueros made “two errors that cost us two goals” in the final 10 minutes.

SBCC will take on Richland (Texas) in the third-place game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
