Gauchos rough up neighbors from up north

UCSB Women's VolleyballThe UCSB women’s volleyball team made quick work of Thompson Rivers University in an exhibition match Wednesday night at Robertson Gymnasium, defeating the team from British Columbia three games to zero.

The Gauchos won 25-10, 25-12, 25-16, behind Rebecca Saraceno’s 12 kills and Stacey Schmidt’s nine. As a team, the Gauchos hit at a .371 clip while the Wolf Pack hit -.081, committing 28 errors in 86 swings.

UCSB (2-1 in the regular season) did have a chance to see some of its newcomers in action as freshmen Olivia RuffErica Lau and Mimi Cuttrell played extended minutes as did Long Island transfer Quinn Williams.

Hurting the Wolf Pack’s poor hitting percentage was UCSB’s play at the net as the Gauchos racked up four solo blocks and had eight total team blocks. Schmidt had two solo blocks while Kasey Kipp and Lily Lopez had one apiece.

Libero Chelsey Lowe led the way with nine digs while Saraceno chipped in eight more. Setter Dana Vargas had 29 assists.

The Gauchos return to regular action, facing No. 15 San Diego in two consecutive matches on Friday and Saturday in San Diego. UCSB officially opens its home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they face Santa Clara at The Thunderdome.
