City College looks to back up big upset

After posting one of the biggest football wins in school history last week, SBCC will try to keep that momentum going on Saturday at 6 p.m. when it takes on Ventura in its final nonconference game at La Playa Stadium.

The Vaqueros (1-1) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to upset No. 5 Canyons 17-14 in their home opener. SBCC is ranked 18th in Southern California, four spots behind Ventura (2-0).

“It’s tough after a big emotional win to find a way to get back to that emotional level,” said third-year SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos, who celebrated his 49th birthday last Saturday. “We’re proud of that win, now we have to come back with another great effort.”

Sophomore speedster Jakharie Murphy, who’s been sidelined with a hamstring injury, could make his 2009 debut at wide receiver for the Vaqueros.

Ventura topped Antelope Valley 27-11 last Saturday, thanks to a 21-4 second-half advantage. The Pirates hold a 24-21-1 series advantage over the Vaqueros, including a 49-0 win last year when they took a 28-0 first-quarter lead on three Vaquero fumbles.

“We tackled better (against Canyons), the offense had that long fourth-quarter drive (83 yards on 14 plays) and we took advantage of their bad punt snap (leading to the game-winning TD drive),” noted Moropoulos. “You have to do well in all three parts of the game — offense, defense and special teams — to beat teams like Canyons and Ventura.”

Quarterback John Uribe completed 13-of-28 for 166 yards against Canyons but no pass was bigger than the one he threw in the fourth quarter to Art Gonzalez on fourth-and-20 from the Cougar 23. Gonzalez grabbed the 22-yard toss at the 1 and Uribe scored on the next play to put SBCC ahead 17-14 with 7:59 to play.
