Carp goes 5-5 in own tournament

The 13 girls volleyball teams which played in Carpinteria’s volleyball tourney on Saturday got to see plenty of court-time, with each squad playing 10 games to 25 points before the top four advanced to the playoffs.

While neither the Warriors, Bishop Diego or Cate made it through, Carpinteria was able to pick up a win over eventual-champion Nordhoff. The Warriors went 5-5 on the day, and they are now 2-0 against the Rangers on the season.

“The girls did a really great job against Nordhoff, and they weren’t fazed at all by the opponent,” said coach Katie Dolge, who also said that her team played impressively in a loss to a formidable Mission Prep team.

Carpinteria lost to rival Bishop Diego, however, and actually suffered a bigger loss during warm-ups as middle blocker Jeanine Van Wingerden went down with a broken foot. Kelci Jones racked up 29 kills on the day while Erin Harris had 13 ikills and four blocks.

“Overall, it was a roller-coaster of a day for us,” said Dolge.

Bishop Diego and Cate did not report results, but Dolge said that the Cardinals had the same record as Nordhoff but had lost to the Rangers in the morning, keeping them out of the tourney playoffs.
