Bradford wins boys race, Royals place second twice

Evan Bradford won the boys race and freshman Allie Kraynyk took eighth in the girls heat as San Marcos’ cross-country teams each took second place to Arroyo Grande in Wednesday’s 5-way meet at Lompoc High School.

Bradford, who finished second in the race last year, clocked in at 16:28.

“I was hoping he’d win it this time around. We were actually hoping for a little bit faster time but he didn’t really have anybody out there pushing him,” said Royals head coach Lawrence Stehmeier.

Kraynyk’s time was 19:50 while senior Jenny Haden was six seconds behind her. Stehmeier said it should be a good competition between the youngster and the veteran throughout the year.

The boys team has two seniors and five juniors, and the coach said that this year will be a “good” year but next year could be “amazing.” He also said that numerous runners recorded lifetime bests on Wednesday.
