Jeff Wilson opened up a 5-stroke lead at the City Golf Championship on Sunday, improving on Saturday’s 67 with a 65 in Round 2 at Santa Barbara Golf Club.
Levi Garcia was low man on the day, turning in a 63 that he hoped had saved him from missing the cut after a first-round 78. He didn’t have to worry, however, as it turned out to be 146.
“It started off pretty slow, then I made a couple birdies here, a couple birdies there,” Garcia said of his round.
He was four-under with five holes to play and birdied three of those to finish up strong.
“I wanted to get to one-over, that was my goal and that’s what I did,” said Garcia, who plays for Allan Hancock College and winner of last week’s San Luis Obispo County Championships.
Defending champion Brandon Gama carded a four-under 66, pulling him into a second-place tie at 137 with Phil Horwith, who had shared the lead starting the day with Wilson and Michael Flynn.
Two-time winner Tony Verna, Johnny Henno and Andrew Perez sit together at 138.
The Championship flight gets started early Monday morning with the leaders coming in around noon.
