Simon-Teufel stopped in CIF semis

Marcos GironSanta Barbara’s Spencer Simon and Evan Teufel were stopped just short of a shot at a CIF title, falling to University’s Matt Siow and Reo Asami 7-6, 6-1 in Saturday’s second semifinal.

Thousand Oaks’ Denis Lin and Marcos Giron, who had advanced out of the same regional as Simon-Teufel, defeated Siow-Asami 6-3, 6-2 in the final for their second-straight doubles championship.

The doubles finalists will play each other again on Wednesday – but this time in singles – when University and Thousand Oaks meet for the Division I championship.

Simon and Teufel, Channel League doubles champions, won two matches on Friday to advance to Saturday’s Final Four. Straight-sets victories included a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Mira Costa’s Dylan Tevlin and Dennis Hong, and a 6-2, 6-2 win over CAMS’ Larry Pang and Attila Lassu in the quarterfinals.

While Simon will return to the Dons next season, Teufel graduates along with Billy Grokenberger from the Dons’ Channel League champion squad that finished with a 16-4 record after a quarterfinal CIF loss to Mater Dei.
