Owls defend home court to even series with Cate

Home court proved to be a huge factor in this season’s Cate-Laguna Blanca boys volleyball rivalry, as the Owls shook off a drubbing at the Rams’ place by posting a 25-18, 25-20, 25-9 sweep at Merovick Gym on Wednesday.

“They played great on their court and we played great on our court,” said Laguna coach Bobby Sanchez. “I’d really like to play them a third time, but that’ll have to wait until next year,” he said.

Julian Harake led the Owls with 12 kills, five blocks and three digs, while Spencer Dousabout continued his upward progression at setter.

“He’s a soldier out there. He’s running the offense with so much more confidence,” said Sanchez.

The Owls also have senior Max Johnston back on the court from injury, although he is limited to playing libero due to doctor’s orders.

The Rams, who finish atop the Condor League along with Fillmore, got 13 kills from Joe Gottwald. Both Laguna and Cate will find out where the playoffs will place them on Saturday.
