DP 4×4 relay trucks the field at Finals

The Dos Pueblos 4×400 relay team of Cliff Lekas, Patrick Smith, Isaiha Brown and Steven Scarvelis won a CIF Division II title on Saturday in a time of 3 minutes, 19.98 seconds at Cerritos College.

The relay team led a strong showing from the Charger boys team, which placed third overall in D-II.

Scarvelis individually ran right at his prelim time to take home a third-place in the 300 hurdles and Brown was sixth in the 100-meter sprint. Thrower Nick Scarvelis was fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

The Chargers 4×100 squad improved a touch on its prelim time, clocking in at 42.19 and fifth place.

San Marcos’ pair of leapers, senior Bennie Kirkwood and sophomore Hannah McDaniel, placed fourth and sixth respectively. McDaniel moved up to sixth in the finals with a jump of 5’3″ and Kirkwood was fourth at 6’3″.

“He’s the one guy who has been the biggest gamer for us,” Royals head coach Marylin Hantgin said of Kirkwood, a first-year track athlete as a senior.

In Division IV, Laguna Blanca’s Kevin Lunn dropped off his pace from prelims and finished eighth in the 3200. Cate’s Nick Bern dropped his time under two minutes at 1:59.76 to take seventh in the 800. Carpinteria pole vaulter Evan Stanford came through in ninth.
