City Golf Championship opens Silver Anniversary

Last year’s runner-up Michael Flynn, Phil Horwith and Jeff Wilson share the lead after the first round of the 50th City Golf Championship, each turning in a 3-under 67 on Saturday at Santa Barbara Golf Club.

The pack isn’t far behind, with Brandon Cohen, Andrew Perez and Sean Wischmeyer one stroke off the leaders’ pace. Daniel Inocencio and two-time winner Anthony Verna posted matching 69s. Santa Barbara High junior Shane Lebow is three back at 70.

The Championship flight teed off in the afternoon on Saturday, but gets its start before 7 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday.

In the tournament’s other flights, Grant Sparkes fired a 69 to take a 3-stroke lead over Paul Postel in the Palmer Division. In the Hogan Flight, 6-foot-9 inch ex-Westmont hoopster Shawn Stuerman has a 4-stroke lead after shooting 70.

Frank Gonzales leads the Nicklaus Flight by just a stroke at 72, while Jerry Peifer and Todd Smith are tied atop the Trevino Division with first-day rounds of 76. Brian Milner has a 5-stroke lead after turning in a 75 in the Snead Flight, and Aaron Gilles’ 82 leads the Player Flight by a stroke.
