Yokubaitis’ strong effort falls short in Bishop loss

Bishop Diego dropped a one-run decision to Tri-Valley League foe Malibu for the second time in three days Friday as they were chomped by the host Sharks 5-4. It was a lack of hitting in key situations that once again had the Cardinals (2-7, 0-4) on the wrong end of things.

“We’re not hitting with men on base. Our best hitters were up with runners on, and a few times they went down without even getting the bat off their shoulders,” said coach Brian Moulton. “Our hitting is a big issue in this nightmare-ish start.”

It was, however, one of the team’s best games according to the coach. Cody Yokubaitis came on in relief in the first inning and went the rest of the way.

“He was outstanding. He was throwing strikes and getting a lot of ground balls. We played good defense as well, despite a couple of throwing errors… We should have won the game,” said Moulton.

Malibu’s Matt Cathcart had another big day for the Sharks, pitching five strong innings and also smacking a triple. Paul Gherini was 3-for-4 at the plate for Bishop and Ryan Landeros and Joe Salda each picked up a pair of base knocks.

The Cardinals host St. Bonaventure on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Malibu is now 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the TVL.
