Wakamatsu, Flores match in 200 IM and 100 fly

San Marcos swimmers Emilia Wakamatsu and Jorge Flores must have eaten the same breakfast, as both raced to personal bests in the same two events in a lopsided win over an undermanned St. Bonaventure team Wednesday in the Royals’ pool.

Wakamatsu’s times gave the junior wins in both the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, and girls head coach Brian Roth was especially pleased because the performance came in the absence of senior Emily Wheeler, who normally wins those events.

Wakamatsu clocked in at 2 minutes, 36 seconds and 18 tenths for the 200 IM and 1:08.53 in the 100 fly.

Zoe Kirker also came through for the shorthanded girls side, which was also without Parinda Sukavivatanachai, posting a PR and a first place in the 500-free with a time of 5:59.78. Kirker also came in second in the 100-fly.

“That was the name of the game, everybody stepping up,” said Roth.

Abel Hamilton was a two-event winner on the boys side, finishing fastest in the 50 (0:25.77) and 200 freestyle (2:04.20).

Flores’ times were 2:23.58 in the IM and 1:06.39 in the 100 fly.
