Sleep’s bat wide awake in win over ‘Nova

Freshman Diana Sleep smacked a double and a bases-clearing triple for the Bishop Diego softball team in Thursday’s 18-6 mercy-rule win over host Villanova.

Sleep has had a monster week, going 3-for-3 with a homer to rally the Cards over previously unbeaten Nordhoff, then hitting another dinger against Hueneme. She also pitched three innings in that game even thought she hadn’t done so since elementary school.

Star pitcher Jennifer Jimenez had been out with a bad back until coming in to pitch in the third. She also followed up Sleep’s triple with a homer to left field.

“That home run was the best medicine for her back,” said coach Tom Beamer.

Bishop (8-13, 3-3) still has a shot in the wide-open Frontier League, with Malibu on tap for Tuesday.
