SBCC finishes strong in singles, takes 7-1 decision

SBCC swept the last five singles matches on Friday en route to a 7-1 men’s tennis victory over Grossmont on the first day of the Saddleback Tournament in Mission Viejo. No. 2 Elliot Markowitz, a former Santa Barbara High star, blanked Ryan Trias 6-0, 6-0 and No. 4 Hiro Inoue dropped just one game.

“Grossmont is traditionally one of the best teams in the state,” said coach Don Lowry. “They’re down a little this year but I’ll still take a win over them any time.”

Andrew Sokolsky did a good job of filling in for No. 4 singles player Antonio Rodrigues, who missed the trip due to illness. Sokolsky won his No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-0 and teamed with Inoue to overcome a 5-2 deficit and capture the No. 3 doubles 8-5.

The Vaqueros will take Saddleback on Saturday at 11 a.m.
