Saito, Blum back-to-back in Warrior victory

The Carpinteria baseball team got contributions from all sides on Wednesday afternoon, using them to crush Dunn 13-1 in a non-league matchup on the Warriors’ diamond.

Impressive hitting from the Warriors led them to close the game after only five innings. Nathan Saito and Steven Blum hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to crack open a 5-run inning. Saito’s blast was his fifth of the season and accounted for his fifteenth RBI. Nick Razo later hit a fourth-inning three-run homer to basically finish off Dunn.

Saito was 3-for-4 to push his season average over .500.

Head coach Pat Cooney said he wanted to use the game as an opportunity for other pitchers to get time on the mound.

“The plan was to get guys work who haven’t gotten too much,” Cooney said, meaning relievers Diego Carrillo, Steven Blum and Robert Thornton.

Cooney’s decision paid off after Carillo took over for starter Trevor Madden in the third inning. Carrillo, Thornton and Blum all recorded two hits and a scoreless inning pitched.

The Warriors have one more spring break game on the schedule before opening up Tri-Valley League play on Tuesday against Oak Park. Nordhoff is Friday.
