Maldonado, Deardorff pick up lone wins for Dons

Freddy Maldonado won the boys 400-meter race in 52.73 seconds and Briggs Deardorff ran the 1600 in 4:41.63 for Santa Barara High’s only two varisty wins in Wednesday’s track meet against Ventura at Valley Stadium. Ventura’s boys won 104-22 while the girls won 111-15.

Rebecca Vail was just .07 seconds off the winning pace in the girls 100, finishing in 13.27.

“In this kind of meet you just hope your kids can get some good marks and continue to improve,” said Dons coach Olivia Perdices.

Many of the events featured just one or two Dons going up against a whole pack of Cougars, as Ventura has a much bigger team.

“I’m kind of used to that because we don’t have many distance runners,” said Deardorff. “They were fast, so I just tried to draft off of them.”
