Bulldog spikers stun Royals in five sets

San Marcos has been strong in the middle all season, but things broke down in Tuesday’s 25-21, 25-23, 25-27, 9-25, 15-13 boys volleyball upset at Buena.

“Our middle game, which is really our strength, just lagged tonight. I’ll bet we didn’t produce two blocks out of the middle on the night,” said stunned Royals coach Roger Kuntz.

The Royals dominated the fourth set 25-9, but let the match away against the Bulldogs, who were firing on all cylinders.

“It’s hard to believe what just transpired. We were very inconsistent in our passing and setting, and we made way too many hitting errors,” said Kuntz. “Buena played very good volleyball.”

Sophomore Jackson Kunz was a bright spot for the Royals, picking up 15 kills and seven aces.

Things are now very interesting in regards to the third and final playoff spot in the Channel League, as the Bulldogs and Royals (12-8, 2-3) are now tied for third in the conference. If San Marcos cannot upset Santa Barbara or Dos Pueblos and Buena holds on against lowly Ventura, there will be a one-match playoff at the end of the season to determine who moves on.
