Young Dons drop opener to Pirates, 6-2

Collin Dewell went 2-for-3 with a double and also pitched a scoreless sixth inning, but the inexperienced Santa Barbara High baseball team committed four errors and dropped its season opener Tuesday at Santa Ynez, 6-2.

The Dons have only one varsity returner this season.

“We had a lot of kids playing their first varsity games and there’s a real difference when the bell rings from practice games to everything else,” said assistant coach Mike Cooney. “The bulk of our kids are juniors and sophomores, so the kids are going to have to mature quickly or this is going to be a long season.”

Jack Crummer, the team’s lone returner, played well defensively and drove in a run for Santa Barbara, which hosts Righetti on Thursday as the Central Coast Tournament continues.
