Warriors split doubleheader with visiting Conqs

Diego Carrillo exploded offensively for Carpinteria in a 9-8 loss to Cabrillo in Saturday’s baseball doubleheader, and the Warriors bounced back to take a more quiet second game 3-2.

Carrillo went 3-for-3 with two homers, four RBIs and three runs scored in the first game. Carpinteria had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and a struggling Conqs pitcher on the mound, but grounded out to end the game.

The Warriors (1-3) gave up two early runs in the second inning of the second game, but starter Nathan Saito took it all the way home from that point forward without giving up another run.

“That second game was key. Nathan was really even-keeled for us on the mound and just had a great outing,” said coach Pat Cooney.

Carpinteria trailed 2-1 before scoring a pair in the fifth inning.

Saito and Isacc Cervantes each had three hits on the day, while Trevor Madden and Robert Thornton each tallied a pair of base knocks.

“It’s still very early in the season, so I’m just looking on the whole to see how we respond to the negatives,” said Cooney.

Next up for the Warriors is a visit ftom Santa Clara on Wednesday.
