Vaquero mini-streak snapped last second

Two days after SBCC posted a 6-5 walk-off baseball win in its final at-bat against Moorpark, the Raiders broke the Vaqueros’ heart on Saturday with a 6-5 walk-off win. Daniel Nimoy drove in the game-winning run on an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Jeremy Baum went 2-for-4 with a double for the Vaqueros (15-15, 4-10), who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Baum’s two-run double in the eighth pulled the visitors within 5-4 and SBCC tied it on an error by the shortstop. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jeremy Howard lined out to left.

“We lined out four times with runners in scoring position,” said coach Teddy Warrecker. “They gave us great opportunities to win. We just needed one more hit in the eighth.”

Joe McGrew turned in 5 1/3 solid innings of relief with two strikeouts and three walks. The only hit he allowed was Nimoy’s game-winner.

Howard hit his first home run of the year in the fourth and shortstop Sean Costella cut the deficit to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. In the last of the ninth, Costella made a long throw from the hole for the second out, keeping John Villareal at second base. Nimoy’s hit went to right field, where Nick Halloran had just been inserted. Halloran made a strong throw to the plate that was a fraction late.

SBCC travels to Ventura on Tuesday and hosts the Pirates on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
