Ten-run first dooms Vaqueros

Citrus scored 10 runs in the first inning on Tuesday at Pershing Park and went on to defeat SBCC in a WSC softball game that was shortened to five innings by the run rule.

Bryanna Monelo didn’t get much help in her first start of the year as three errors led to seven unearned runs in the first frame. Monelo, who had knee surgery a month ago, was replaced in the second inning by Gabby Garza. The Vaqueros (1-9, 1-4) got their bats going with nine hits but also committed seven errors, leading to eight unearned runs.

Lauren Takayesu and Becky Abbott had two hits apiece for SBCC, which scored its runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Erin Breck and a run-scoring single from Amanda Sharp.

Santa Barbara travels to Oxnard on Thursday before heading south this weekend to compete in the Golden West Tournament at Huntington Beach.
