SBSC finishes short-course season strong

Santa Barbara Swim Club has completed the short-course swimming season with over 75% best times in the various championship meets attended.  At the Southern California Junior Olympics, SBSC qualifying swimmers had multiple best times and were faced with extremely challenging competition from the rest of Southern California’s swim clubs.

SBSC’s Age Group Team headed north to Bakersfield to compete in the Central California Championships, where the team finished strong with multiple individual and relay wins.

The final meet of the Championship Season was the USA Swimming Senior Sectional Championships in Las Vegas, where the National team finished in 9th place out of the 56 teams entered.

“We have a relatively small team with an average of 80 out of the 170 members actually competing.  To finish high in the team scores against the teams with 700-900 swimmers says we are competing way above the curve,” said coach John Dussliere.

“The remaining 90 swimmers on the team are in the developmental program and are getting ready to begin competing or are involved in the team for good fitness.  We are just beginning the long course season (50 meter race course) and we will show up even better in the results as we train in a long course (50 meter) pool.  Long course (50 meter pool) swimming is the Olympic course distance, and that is the ultimate goal for our swimmers.  Since SBSC is fortunate to train at Los Banos, at the waterfront in a 50 meter pool, we are sure to see great results this season!”  Coach John goes on to say.

Dussliere, SBSC’s Head Coach, produced Local Olympian Mark Warkentin last year (10k marathon swim) and is a member of the USA National Team Coaching Staff.  Last summer, Coach John was a member of the US Men’s Olympic Swim Team Coaching Staff in Beijing.

Santa Barbara Swim Club has just signed Coach John to a 4-year contract assuring the club’s future with top-level coaching.

“We have the same goals.  We don’t just want to have fast swimmers. We want to have great young student athletes that can come back to Santa Barbara after their college years and be leaders in the community,” he said.

A great example of that is Adrienne Binder, who just finished her Masters Degree at Auburn after becoming an NCAA champion in her signature 500 freestyle event.  And it all started in the pools in Santa Barbara!
