SBCC men capture second behind Worthge’s leaps

Johnathan Worthge captured the triple jump and long jump on Friday at La Playa Stadium, helping the SBCC men’s track team to a season-best second place in WSC Mini-Meet No. 4.

Cuesta claimed the title in the four-team meet with 74 points. Santa Barbara was second with 45, edging third-place Santa Monica by five points.

Worthge recorded a season-best 41 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump and won the long jump at 21-0. Ossie Castorena topped the shot-put field with a heave of 44-2. The Vaqueros also won the 4 x 400 relay in 3:29.48. The squad consisted of Donald Morgenson, Dezmon Hunter, Paul Niglio and Jeff Rosecrance.

The Vaquero women placed third with 38 points. Cuesta took first at 54, followed by Valley with 46.

SBCC had three winners — Elizabeth Iberti (400, 1:13.65), Paige Colijn (3,000, 11:18.50) and Angelica Smith (high jump, season-best 5-0). Colijn won her race by 200 meters, according to coach Scott Fickerson.

Second-place finishers included Stephanie Potter (javelin, 76-7) and Carina Celio (long jump, 15-4).

“We’re starting to rest up and sharpen up for the (WSC) championships,” said Fickerson. “They’re only three weeks away.”

The Vaqueros will compete in the WSC Prelims on April 18 in Ventura, followed by the WSC Finals on April 25 in Bakersfield.
