SBCC edged by Santa Monica, 5-4

After winning the first two doubles to tie Tuesday’s WSC women’s tennis match with Santa Monica, SBCC came up short in the final match and dropped a 5-4 decision to Santa Monica at Pershing Park.

Four of the six singles went to three sets. The Vaqueros (2-6, 2-5 WSC) narrowly won the No. 1 doubles with Meghan Schaefer and Heather Hawke posting a 9-8 (9-7) victory.

With the score tied 4-4, Kathy Startzman and Alex Prince fell to Sarah Anderson-Sally Mercado 8-6 after building leads of 4-0 and 6-4. It was the first loss in six matches for Startzman and Prince.

“I think the pressure of being in the final match with everyone watching got to our girls,” said Vaquero coach Debbie Ekola. “Santa Monica added some players (since the last meeting, which SBCC won 5-4) and re-arranged them so they were tougher.”

SBCC will be at home on Thursday against Glendale.
